Hello out there in Reddit-land. For a while, now, it's been apparent that our rules need some work. They vary wildly in specificity, many of them overlap, and some are just weird. To that end, I present an updated set of rules:

Golden rule: don't be a dick. This includes trolling and harassment, as well as malicious or hateful posting of any kind. Politics and religion are broadly banned from discussion, as these topics almost always lead to a breach of the golden rule. Politically charged slurs, memes, and jargon also fall under this rule. Posting any personal or personally identifiable information is likewise prohibited, as outlined in reddit's content policy.
Posts must be explicitly STO-related and unique. Posts related to other Star Trek properties are disallowed without a meaningful link to STO. Trek news that has an obvious impact on STO is fine, announcement of a new show is not (even if you title it 'Can't wait to see the U.S.S. Pizza in-game!'). Memes that are not STO-related are also disallowed; a meme must have STO content (not just title) to be fit for r/sto. Duplicate posts, especially regarding STO news or changes, will be removed according to age.
No datamined content, leaks, exploits, or hacks. This includes botting, datamining instructions or datamined content, obviously unintended game design that is inherently abusable and has been confirmed by Cryptic, content violating the Terms of Service of the game, and all real-money transactions.
No excessive self-promotion or solicitation. Any posts in which the poster has any vested interest must be limited to twice per week. Examples include links or content that drives traffic to a Youtube channel or videos, Twitch channel or VODs, or brand-enabled personal website. Exceptions may be made where the posts are not primary traffic drivers, such as original images with small watermarks or signatures. Additionally, in- or out-of-game trading requests, solicitations, and advertisements are prohibited.
No forum linking or crossposting. Submissions linking to the Arcgames or official STO forums should be to developer posts, news articles, patch notes, or other extraordinary information.

The primary goal here is to streamline the rules into something significantly simpler to grasp 'at a glance', while more or less maintaining the actual logical ruleset we've been operating under. In other words, this isn't intended as a meaningful change to the rules - though some specific situations are additionally called out - but rather as a structural improvement to the existing ones, and a clarification where there was significant room for differing interpretations.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to solicit feedback and discussion on the rules. I expect some lively debate on the specifics regarding memes and trek news, as well as the exceptions to rule 4. At 'some point' soon we will officially replace the listed rules with these, but hopefully not until all voices are heard.
